Bottom Line:
Top shelf machine. Solid and well built that looks so impressive pictures will not do it justice. If you like espresso and are looking at a heat exchange machine, consider this Rocket.
Positive Product Points
Very Solid and well made. Reasonably quiet. Once grinder is dialed in it produces excellent repeatable espresso. Cup warmer is quit functional. Can fill the water reservoir while cups are warming on top. Group head is E-61. Comes with aluminum Tamper. Drip tray is deep enough to last a while without constantly emptying it.
Negative Product Points
My brand new machine came with a "weak pump". was unable to get consistent shots. Pump was replaced under warranty and now it is working well. Hot water wand sometimes feels too close to group-head lever.
Detailed Commentary
I am new to the espresso process. I love drinking espresso at my local coffee shops and decided to take the plunge and get a machine for home use. I am not the type of person that likes to buy something twice so I researched my options and decided to go with a semi-automatic machine. After speaking with the very helpful staff at the idrinkcoffee showroom in Milton Ontario I decided to go with a Rocket Giotto Premium Plus VII. I paired it with a Compak K3 touch grinder. My first three days with this setup was very frustrating. I was unable to make more than 3 drinks at a time. The setup seemed to be very unpredictable. I kept trying to dial in everything as best as I could and felt the problems was me. (being new to the process: tamping, grind ect) However after grinding through 8 bags of good beans I gave up and brought it back to idrinkcoffee to ask them. They looked at the machine and the next day I was contacted and told they had replaced the pump as it was "weak". I brought the machine home and after three attempts at adjusting the grind I was making consistent delicious espresso. I am still learning but now that the pump has been changed it appears to be fairly easy to use and forgiving for a newcomer such as me. Seems really well built otherwise. The lever for the group-head is smooth and quiet, and the overall quality of the machine feels top notch. There always seems to be lots of steam power, and I have yet to have to wait for the machine in order to do anything. (steam/ extract shot) The fit and finish of the machine is unbelievable. I Love the double gauges on the front, one for boiler pressure and one for group-head pressure. Even with the initial frustration of the pump issues I would still buy another one of these machines. I have research quite a bit and have not come across any other negative reviews regarding the pumps in these machines. (hopefully an isolated incident.) I love the overall quality of the machine and its styling. I would recommend this machine to anyone interested in a machine at this price point. Seems like it was last a long time if cared for properly. I plan on doing the follow up review in a few months to give a more honest review after the machine has been used for a while. (Just felt it was necessary to get a review on hear that mentions the pump issue in case there is other people suffering my frustration)
Buying Experience
Overall has been a great experience buying from idrinkcoffee.com. I went to the showroom and spent several hours talking with the staff and looking a machines without feeling like I was being forced to buy one machine or another. Very knowledgeable staff. After bringing the machine back with some concerns, it was repaired promptly at no cost. (obviously with a machine this new.) They provide an excellent warranty and fix there machines in house. They also have great freshly roasted coffee from a local roaster. They only negative remark I could make regarding my experience would be that I was a little disapointed to have to leave a brand new machine with them and leave empty handed. Would have been nice to be provided with a cheaper used machine to have something to use while my new machine was being serviced. Maybe I am asking to much though. It should also be mentioned that idrinkcoffee.com provided me with free coffee to replace some of the coffee I went through due to the machine malfunctioning. I would recommend buying from idrinkcoffee.
