Bottom Line: The Krups Model XP4050 is attractive with the blue indicator lights set against the stainless steel, but not a reliable machine.
Positive Product Points

Attractive and sturdy, compared to some other units on the market in the same price range. Good size tank.

Negative Product Points

The wand is in an awkward place. Not easy to froth your own milk because of the placement of the wand. The steam nozzle produces a lot of water, before you get steam. The pump is noisy.

Detailed Commentary

I bought a Krups that worked about 5 times before the ready lights stopped working. I exchanged the unit for a second one. Within a month's time, the second unit's lights were working sporadically. Shortly after the light problem started, the pump stopped working properly. As the pump pulled water up to the filter basket, the water started leaking from the top of the filter basket, instead of filtering through the basket. I cleaned the filter and tried to make a shot, without espresso in the basket and still had water leaking out of the top of the filter basket. The espresso machine I bought 10 years ago was not a Krups. Right after I bought the first Krups, I gave my old machine away. I'm disappointed because the Krups didn't work out and I am without a machine. I seriously doubt I will purchase another Krups.

Buying Experience

Sur la Table was very good about replacing the first unit. At this time, they have a 1 year return policy. The sales person was very courteous and helpful. When I returned the second unit, the sales person took issue with the return and displayed quite a bit of attitude. Overall, Sur la Table has always provided excellent service, so I won't hold that person's bad attitude against the store. One bad apple doesn't mean the whole tree is bad.
