Eye catching with good potential, but needs some hacking to make a good cup of joe.
Positive Product Points
Cool looking, good quality, includes a gold mesh filter. Bought on clearance, so very low price. As simple a coffee maker as you can get.
Negative Product Points
MSRP too high ~$40 Difficult to keep clean & clear - neck is narrow and body prone to water spots. Mesh filter lets water through as fast as you can pour it - weak coffee!
I loved the looks of this thing but didn't buy it because it was too expensive for a glorified dripper that can be found for $1. When I found it for $11 on a clearance rack, I snapped one up.
Keeping the carafe spotless is nearly impossible. The neck is too narrow to put your hand in to wash & dry well, and you'll need a bottle brush to clean the spout.
The biggest weakness is the gold mesh filter. Unless you have a very good grinder you will get cloudy coffee, and even then the filter has too big a surface area, and lets the water through too fast without extracting any flavor from the coffee. There's a reason those $1 drippers only have a couple tiny holes at the bottom -- extraction! Using a paper filter slows down the water flow a bit, but you may have to use twice or more the amount of coffee as usual to get a good brew. The only other option is reducing the water flow by blocking the filter somehow. I am working on this...
I think this coffee dripper is a good value for the style -- if you can find it for $11 like I did. But if you're going to spend the MSRP, you'd be better off buying a $1 dripper, some paper filters, and loads of good beans, because it will taste a lot better.
Three Month Followup
Coffee definitely tastes better with a proper dripper cone. To test, I made a cone out of tin foil and then put the filter basket in that. Reducing the water flow made a huge difference in coffee flavor.
One Year Followup
Haven't used it much as I don't usually need to make more than one cup at a time. Plus without a proper dripper inside, it's difficult to make good tasting coffee. Still need to adapt a standard dripper to fit it.
