Detailed Commentary

I inherited the CoffeeTEC from my father about a month ago. He had it for many years before.

Quality of Product:
The quality of this product is impressive for something made mostly of plastic.  Do not be deceived in thinking because its plastic its quality suffers.  My father's house has a water problem; rust and calcium.  The condition I received this unit was not very well, it was caked with calcium and stained with rust. Picture all the black, white and all the white/clear, red.  However, with minimum elbow grease I was able to get this unit back to its original finish and working condition. The temp. and brew speed hasn't changed in 4+ years, nor has any of the components broke.  This unit has been used at least 2-3 times a day for the past 4+ years with no problems. My TEC has made at least 2,900+ cups of coffee. There is probably some performance loss, but I can't tell.

Usability:
Very easy to use.  The separate water tank is fantastic, no more spillage of water when filling. The TEC comes with a GoldTone Filter that works great, as long as you use the proper ground size.  The milk frother is superb.  I use the frother every morning.  I keep a small glass of water next to the unit so that once I'm done frothing the milk I can put the tube in the water and use the remaining steam to clean the frothing components.

Cost vs Value:
Truth be told, my father down graded to a Cuisinart to match the decor, I got this little wonder free. However, with my Krups experience I would strongly consider the TEC over any other coffee maker in its class. $199.00 +tax my sound steep but this machine will produce a cup of coffee with consistent speed and taste for years.

Aesthetics:
Aesthetically the TEC is very pleasing to the eye. Curvy lines, black body, and stainless steel make this unit look very classy and impressive.

Overall Rating:
I don't have much experience with other coffee machines, but from what my palette tells me this is one of the best coffee machines in its class. There is just no disappointment with this unit.

Buying Experience

It was great. I just walked in my father's house and walked out. No salesmen, no line, no money!

Three Month Followup

(see 1 Year Followup)

One Year Followup

Little latte on the followup.

As of, well, today (2/21/2008), my Capresso CoffeeTEC is still brewing beautifully. The tank seals are starting to show wear. I get a small drip of water here and there when transporting the tank from the sink to the unit.  The coffee doesn't seem as hot as it used to be, but it's hot enough.

I will admit, I have suffered from turning the unit on, walking away, and returning to moat of water around my machine. However, for myself, all the occurrences of this have been a user error. To resolve this issue I've gotten in the habit of sliding the water tank into position and pressing down to ensue proper seating of the seals. I'm also in the habit of good maintenance. At least once a month I take all the components that don't require tools to remove, clean and inspect them for severe wear.

Regardless of the small inconveniencies brought on by wear, this unit is 6+ years old and being used daily. I still stand by my original rating and WILL replace this with another CoffeeTEC or its future model replacement.
