For the money, you'll be dissapointed in this one!
Positive Product Points
Hmmmm.. well, I guess I must admit that the machine does do a good job at making great tasting coffee. I also like the 1-4 cup setting which produces a rich flavorful cup when making small portions. The coffee maker has a nice appearance and is a great size for kitchen counters, not too big. The coffee filter holder is great, it is easily removed for cleaning and easy to put back in.
Negative Product Points
Filter door pops open which gets annoying!. Water level indicator hard to see, often develops a bubble.. Carafe dribbles when pouring. Coffee doesn't stay hot enough. Rubber feet pop off.
Detailed Commentary
When I first removed the machine from it's box I was not at all impressed with it's lightweight feel. I've recently been a fan of thermos carafes but after owning this one I'm slowly changing my mind. The carafe looks good and seems to be built solid, however it does not keep the coffee hot. Maybe the coffee doesn't come out hot enough to start with, not sure. Even though the machine has a hotplate that stays on for 20 min. after brewing, it still does not keep the java hot enough for me. I found myself popping my cup in the microwave for 15 seconds after pouring it. I previously owned a Gevalia glass thermos carafe coffee maker in the past and it did a much better job of keeping the coffee hot until the glass thermos broke.. I liked the idea of the carafe because I really don't like the burnt taste most ordinary glass coffee pots produce after sitting on the burner for an hour or so. Filling the machine is not much fun either, to start with, it almost appears the machine was made for left handed people since the water level indicator is on the left hand side! You kinda have to twist your body as you pour the water with your right hand and bend your neck around to the left side to view this little tube of an indicator that is really difficult to see, and while you're doing all this be carefull because the pouring action of the carafe is such that if you try to pour too fast it dribbles all over. Many times I had water all over the counter just trying to fill it. The machine also has these two rubber feet on the bottom that repeatedly come off every time you slide the coffee maching forward to fill it. That got annoying after the first week and off they came never to return! The carafe fits rather snug into the machine and removing it always causes the filter door to pop open, so I had to start holding the door shut everytime I removed the carafe, not what I expect from a brand name like Krups! Oh, one last thing, the water level indicator, which is nothing more than a small plastic tube often develops a big bubble in it which throws off the level and then you really have no idea how much water you've just poured in the machine.
Buying Experience
I chose this product as a "gift" out of a catalog of other coffee makers. I chose it because I recognized the name Krups as a top notch name and with the price that it goes for I was sure I would get a top quality coffee maker. However, I was really dissapointed with it's features. Makes great tasting coffee, but I'm back on my search for a machine that offers functionality as well as performance. Definetely not worth the pricey $129.00 that it retails for. I'm in the process of returning the machine and probably will go with the Cuisinart Brew Central. I giving up for now on the carafe idea and going back to the glass pot, however the Cuisinart has some really nice temperature and heating time controls which I hope will eliminate the "burnt coffee" problem. It appears to be very well built and very functional from what I saw of it in the store. It also is a heck of alot cheaper at $79.00 bucks!
