Detailed Commentary
I used Coffeegeek to help with my research and learned the Krups had apparently upgraded their product quality in the last couple of years. Previously, I owned a Cuisenart Grind and Brew which I was thought was adequate, but never used the grinder as it clogged. That machine finally died, so I needed a new one. I learned that the desired water temperature should be in the 200 degree Fahrenheit neighborhood, so I called Krups. The Customer Service Rep told me that the KT4065 produces temperatures between 190 - 204 F and also has the (desirable) shower-type water disperser, so I bought the machine. I used a digital meat thermometer as I was cleaning the machine and found the water to reach only 180F. The temp in the carafe was at about 177F. There does not seem to be a heating element/plate, which I understand to be a good thing, although the Cust. Service Rep told me the machine has one. (Perhaps for the glass carafe model.) The coffee came out nicely and, for 8 cups, took less than 10 minutes to brew. The machine has a dual auto-on feature so you can set it for weekday and weekend auto-brew if you want. Another feature is the "Aroma Function" which the instruction book says should be used for brewing less than 6 cups to "properly extract the coffee taste from the coffee grounds." There is also a secondary water filter that I was pleased to see and is easily accessible. Back to the water temp, I called Krups who stood by their specs for ~200F water. They suggested that I return the machine, which I did. The new machine produced a temperature of about 185F, again using my digital meat thermometer in the grounds basket as the water was dispersed. The temp taken immediately afterwards in the carafe showed 179F. For me, this is fine, but my wife tends to like her coffee hot and jokes that she is one of the few that will nuke a cup of coffee fresh out of the pot. The machine is easy to use and clean, looks good on the counter, and (for me) brews a nice cup 'o joe. I just can't leave the coffee in the carafe long as it tends to cool, even though I pre-heat the carafe. The price was right too. There are other machines on the market which brew a nice hot cup, but they also cost significantly more, so for my money, I like this machine.
Buying Experience
I bought this machine at Bed, Bath & Beyond and also used my 20% off coupon! Our local store didn't have it, although I could order it and have it delivered. I chose to go out of town though. When I returned the first machine, there was no problem whatsoever with the exchange. Very easy.
