Detailed Commentary
I have owned several of these coffee makers since I got my first one from Gevalia. I worked out of town so needed to have two. Picked up others and a carafe at thrift stores (Goodwill, Salvation Army) and one being tossed out by an office, all recently. My original two were Gevalia freebees and were new. One quit, after 12 years (imagine that!)... turned out it was the thermal fuse (or cutoff as it is also called), which I replaced. If this happens to yours, go online and find a small appliance repair shop and read them the numbers and temp off the old one. It can be bypassed temporarily but this is not a permanent fix and you must monitor the coffeemaker and be sure to unplug it when coffee is done.
If you break a carafe, save the handle. The handle and harness remove easily. There is a philips screw down in the hole in the handle to switch out a broken carafe. No need to be fussy about carafe handle color if you find the wrong color replacement.
Now that I'm retired I have four complete Melitta BCM 4C coffee makers, one to use and the others for backup. I love this coffeemaker!
