Top recommended machine that delivers all I hav read about it. Buying used saves on cost.
Positive Product Points
They say this is a "mini" but it's a substantial sized appliance on my countertop! Tall, too..thank goodness I didn't get the Super jolly! I bought this used, in like-new condition, and the previous owner had already "taped" the phlanges of the inside of the doser unit. (Those of you who hav read on this site know what I am talking about). It helps get "all" of the grinds out of the dosing unit. I brush it out every use, every time and it is clean, clean, clean. I hav a huge kitchen too, and I like lots of room, so maybe since this is the first grinder I hav ever owned, I am just not used to the set up. Between the espresso machine (EB2) and the grinder, it takes up half my space on a bar-sink area I hav in a more remote location of my kitchen. I love it though, and don't regret the purchase of either at all.
Negative Product Points
I hear people lament about the "ugly cord" coming out of the left side of the Mazzer mini grinder, and while it might not be the optimum place to put it, it's not that big an issue for me, really. My unit came with no doser lid, but I bought one online for $8 from phaeloncoffee and it fits perfectly.
Detailed Commentary
I don't hav anything to compare the Mazzer mini to..it is my first grinder. I read, read & read the reviews, advice and information right here on coffeegeek.com. I knew that I would want a decent grinder ,and was actually leaning towards a macap. The poster that posted my Mazzer mini for sale lived very close to me here in FL, which meant he didn't hav to ship it, and I paid him via paypal right away even though it took me a week to go pick it up. (Our schedules kept clashing). Finally I got it. This was a year ago I bought it, and I did the wrong thing and bought my espresso machine first...but in my justified defense, I was looking for a set-up and was flexible enough on some points (I really wanted to save money) so wasn't "set" on a certain machine. Some machines were being offered with a grinder coming with it, (you know, people dumping their "old" set-up's?) Well, I bought the espresso machine separate because it came up as an opportunity to buy it, so I grabbed it..then I started looking for a grinder since the espresso machine came by itself. I iwll say I'm glad I got the Mazzer because this grinder kicks butt! Stepless means endless finite adjustments. Beans are soo important too..so make sure you get quality beans if you are going to spend the kind of money you invest in a Mazzer. I buy my beans from INTELLIGENTSIA.com. They ship my beans to me within 24 hours of roasting them, so if you are looking for fresh beans that are superior in every way, try the Black Cat espresso roast at INTELLIGENTSIA.com. Service and product, they are truly the best. As far as the Mazzer, I hav no complaints and am very happy with the price I paid. It's all that I'v read on it...sturdy, quality, just a great grinder.
Buying Experience
Was fast, easy for me. I kept looking right here on the Buy/Sell/Trade thread...and viola', found a Mazzer mini...just miles away from me. (Note: before I bought my espresso machine or my grinder, I kept getting one guy who continually emailed me, wanting to sell me basically what he happened to hav, instead of something that would best suit my needs/wants...so be careful of people selling to you..you are ultimately responsible for your choices!) But the Mazzer grinder was sold to me by a great guy who was honest and I am very happy with the purchase.
