Excellent grinder for drip-brew grinding. A praiseworthy machine.
Positive Product Points
Much has been written about this grinder extolling its virtues for espresso grinding. I purchased it for drip-brew grinding, and believe it to be equally excellent for that application.
Negative Product Points
There are very few negative points for this grinder. About the only negative I can find is the location of the power cord, which is on the side instead of the back, but that is fairly inconsequential. Although the grinder is a little on the large side for a kitchen, it is so attractive that it enhances rather than detracts from the kitchen ambiance.
Detailed Commentary
I decided to write this review, because little has been written about this grinder for use to grind for drip brewing. The excellent detailed commentary on the grinder states: "With all of this said I don't recommend using this grinder for anything other than espresso or Turkish coffee grinding." I disagree.
I use the grinder for drip coffee, and love it. Its virtues for expresso grinding also apply to drip grinding. When used for drip grinding, it is just as beautiful and well designed and fun to use, just as quiet, and just as fast (or faster if the grind is less fine). I use a fairly fine grind (I set the grind at 2 1/2), and can grind enough coffee in less than a minute to make a full pot. The Technivorm drip maker I use works well with finely ground coffee, and in combination with the Mazzer, in my view, makes a superior brew.
The location of the doser fork has been criticized as being too far below the bottom of the doser. However, using the grinder for drip grinding, I find that to be an advantage. I place a small glass bowl on top of the fork to catch the grinds when dispensed from the doser. It works great.
The technical virtues of the Mazzer have been covered in detail by many reviewers far more knowledgeable than I, so I will comment instead on the aesthetic experience of using the Mazzer as part of my morning ritual. In my view, the Mazzer Mini has achieved a level of beauty and excellence where the machine contributes significantly to the aesthetic experience, such that the process and product complement each other, and the appreciation of each enhances the appreciation of both. That is high praise for a coffee grinder, but the Mazzer is a praiseworthy machine.
After buying the Mazzer, I yearn for nothing better.
Buying Experience
I purchased the Mazzer Mini from Whole Latte Love. It was well-packed, and promptly shipped. I chose Whole Latte Love because it advertised the version with the timer, and gets good reviews.
