Overall, I'm very pleased with this grinder and glad I got it. I recommend it.
Positive Product Points
This grinder yields a good grind with no powder, which is the main object. It has stepless grind adjustment allowing a fine tuned dial-in process. The doser is VERY well designed, and just the right side. It is VERY quiet with powerful 150 W motor. It is a well designed, smooth operating grinder, with a good fit and finish, and heavy duty sturdy construction.
Negative Product Points
It has some common problems shared with many other grinders of its type. It has the usual problem of 2 to 3 grams left over in the chute. Also, the stepless grind adjustment must be redialed if going from fine to coarse to fine again. The grinder shield in the bean hopper catches too many beans, but it is easily removed, solving the problem.
Detailed Commentary
The first thing that struck me when I first opened the box, besides the rather bizarre packing job by Nuova (Chris's double boxed the Nuova box), was how good looking the machine is. Form follows function, and in this case it paid off. The striking red enameled body with a dash of chrome on top, acting like a mirror, gives a great clean contrast, like an Italian sports car. The jewel box shaped bean hopper gets my vote for uniqueness. The black and clear plastic doser is in the right proportions, and also compliments the look. But it would have been nicer if it were glass and metal. Over all the grinder is a looker in my opinion.
But that's not what I bought it for. So on to the real story.
Construction: Very solid. Enameled steel. Nice and compact, yet heavy. Fit and finish is good.
Motor: Heavy duty. 150 W. I'm very pleased with how extremely quiet it is. It has a very effortless sound when grinding. Impressive.
Grind: I looked at the grind from press pot to espresso under a jeweler's loop, and it looked very clean, virtually no powder.
Stepless grind adjustment: This is accomplished by a dial on the upper left hand side of the grinder body. This function seems to work very well as far as dialing in to your favorite grind. The numbers are meaningless except as a 'local' reference, since it can go more than once around the dial to go from the finest to the coarsest useful grind. If you are in the espresso region you can easily move from one grind to another to adjust for different beans types or ristretto and back again using the reference numbers. The only problem is, that all of these reference numbers become invalid if you change to a coarse setting and then back to espresso again. You have to dial in all over again to a new set of reference numbers. This seems to be somewhat of a common problem with stepless adjustments. So this (and maybe other) stepless grinder is superior for one region of grind but less than perfect for going back and forth between fine and coarse. It should be used as a dedicated grinder for espresso, because of the doser and great fine tuning capability. That's what I bought it for.
Bean hopper: Just the right size, not too big. Good fit into the machine, and easily removed. Lid fits nicely. Not a really tight seal, but I never keep beans in there for more than one session anyway. The grinder shield in the bean hopper was catching a lot of beans, so I easily removed it by unscrewing it. No problem, now I can clean out the grinder area easily.
Chute: For press pot the grinds just blow right through, but for espresso grind, they just kind of fall out; and the last bit just lays there. So you have to clean it out with a brush when you're done. Not the most fun, but this also seems like a common problem with most grinders.
Doser: Just the right size! Works like a charm !! Doesn't leave any grinds. Very well designed. I originally was going to buy a doserless grinder, but this doser is not an obstruction to the process, but an asset, especially if you have company over and could use a doser.
Portafilter holder: Well designed and adjustable.
Clean up is very easy, because the bean hopper and doser give total access when the lid is removed.
Buying Experience
Buying experience was fine. The people at Chris's were all very accommodating. Everything went smoothly. Chris is a trip.
