Regardless of the price if you are looking for a solid and professional grinder under $300.00 this grinder is worth serious consideration.
Positive Product Points
I bought the Rocky after owning the Rialto for a couple of years. I got a great deal on the Rocky and the base which holds both the grinder and the espresso machine as a unit. I use the Rocky on a dialy basis and like the solidy professional performance of this grinder. It grinds a consistent grind and has multiple settings for various grind options. Nice layout, attractive and easy to use. Excellent value for the price.
Negative Product Points
I can be loud but I have used other solid/professional grinders like the Rocky and don't beleive it to be any louder. When grinding very oily beans the bean bin can prevent beans from easily sliding into the burr mechanism which requires shaking of the grinder to move the beans down. I have only experienced this with very oily beans. The shute does need to be cleaned and this requires a small pointed device to help clean the chute. Otherwise no negative points.
Detailed Commentary
I really like this grinder and as I've said I use it daily to grind different grinds of coffee. I typically grind for espresso, french press and vac, although I also grind for our morning auto drip. I can adjust the grind easily depending on what machine I will be using. This is a solid grinder that packs some weight behind it. You will not see this machine doing the counter-top dance. I like the simple design, fairly easy to clean and add beans. The smoky bean bin and grind receptacle keep the coffee from getting too much light exposure which I believe can impact coffee flavor. Whether you own a Rancilio espresso machine or not this grinder is an excellent, professional grade grinder that will give you years of service.
Buying Experience
I got a great deal on the machine and stand. I would have paid full price for this grinder. I think it is among the very best in class.
