You will never master espresso with this grinder, it will even make you fustrated
Positive Product Points
Looks nice, well made housing considering its made out of plastic Good budget grinder if you are unsure of getting into home espresso Starbucks support and warranty
Negative Product Points
- the settings need to be modified to work on a decent espresso machine -the grinds are inconsistent with lots of dust creating unpleasant taste such as bitterness in espresso - to much float and play with the burr set
When I first got this grinder I thought this machine was awesome and it was because I always depended on the coffee house to grind my beans for me, now I was able to adjust my own grinds and therefore made better espresso.
However the more and more experience I have making espresso at home the more and more apparent the flaws of this machine surfaced, especially when I upgraded my espresso machine. I found in order to grind fine enough I had to modify the grind settings inside the machine, which can very easily be done if you search the forums at coffeegeek.com,alt.coffee, and I believe sweetmarias even shows you how to do this. There are even instructions on one of the consumer reviews of this product
Even though this mod allowed me to grind fine enough and allowed me more adjustments for espresso, no matter what sweet spot I found on the grinder, it could easily change by the next shot simply because of the amount of float there is in the burr set.
I also noticed the grinds where not very consistent and created a lot of dust, because of the various sizes and the dust this causes the espresso machine to overextract some of the coffee and undereextract the other part.
I think the only reason this grinder gets so many good reviews is people like me dont know how much better coffee can be with a better grinder unless they have experience or bought an upgraded grinder to compare it to
Starbucks is always a pleasure to deal with, cant take that away from them plus they really stand by there warranty
