Detailed Commentary
This is pretty much a repeat of my Cory large-mouth review; the two brands are very similar in design and function.
Though these units can cost $25 and up on Ebay, I managed to find mine for $5 at St. Vincent DePaul. It is the only unit I have found so far that had a nice soft gasket.
It came with a coiled wire affair and chain to use with a filter sock, but I prefer to use a Cory rod for a filter. It works fine, and is much easier to deal with. Don‘t listen to people who say that the Cory rods don‘t do a good job of filtering. I get almost NO sediment in the bottom of the pot.
The nice thing about the Silex is that it‘s made of Pyrex brand heat-resistent glass, so I feel a little better about putting it directly on an electric burner (no higher than medium...)
